Quick answer

If your lights flicker when the AC kicks on, or a breaker trips and will not reset, the fault is usually at the panel or on one overloaded circuit, and in New York City fixing it properly means doing it to code and, for most work, filing a permit. We answer around the clock, diagnose at the panel first, and quote the repair before anything gets opened up.

Electricians in New York, NY

Older buildings, modern loads, and a code that just changed

New York apartments and row houses were wired for a different era. A 1920s Manhattan walk-up often still carries two-wire circuits and a 60-amp service; a 1950s Woodhaven two-family may run on its original fuse box. Modern loads land on top of that: an induction range, a heat pump, a Level 2 charger, three window units in July. Most of our work is bringing that older system up to what the building draws now, the way the 2025 NYC Electrical Code requires.

At RRR Electrical the work that follows from that is not exotic. It is panel upgrades and service upgrades, dedicated circuits for the appliances the building was never wired for, and GFCI and AFCI protection where the 2025 code now requires it.

Signs worth a call

The six calls we get most in New York

Each has a usual cause and a usual fix.

Breaker trips every time the AC runs

A window unit and a microwave on one 15-amp circuit will trip all summer. The fix is a dedicated circuit, not a bigger breaker.

More on dedicated circuit installation

Warm outlet, buzzing panel, burning smell

Those are the three signs we treat as an emergency. Kill the circuit and call; a loose connection heats up before it fails.

Help with emergency electrician

Panel is full and the co-op wants a load letter

Most pre-war Manhattan apartments run on 60 or 100 amps. We do the load calculation and the upgrade the board will sign off on.

Help with electrical panel upgrade

A DOB or ECB electrical violation showed up

Unpermitted work from a previous owner is the usual cause. We correct it, file it, and get it inspected.

DOB Electrical Violation Correction

Nowhere to charge the car

A hardwired 240V charger needs a permit and often a panel with spare capacity. We tell you which on the first visit.

Need EV charger installation?

Insurance wants the knob and tube gone

Old cloth-covered runs behind plaster are the job we do more than any other in Brooklyn and Queens row houses.

How a job runs

The same steps for a dead outlet and a 200-amp upgrade.

  1. 1

    Call, any hour

Tell us what is happening: the symptom, the building type, whether power is out in one room or the whole place. Photos of the panel help.

  2. 2

    Diagnose at the panel

We meter the circuit, open the panel and find the cause. For planned work we do a load calculation and check the service size.

  3. 3

    Written scope and cost drivers

You get the scope in writing, with the things that move the price named: panel location, riser size, plaster repair, Con Edison involvement.

  4. 4

    Permit, then the work

We file the DOB electrical permit where one is required, then do the job with armored cable and rated boxes, labeled and tested.

  5. 5

    Inspection and sign-off

We schedule the DOB inspection, meet the inspector, and hand you the sign-off and a labeled panel directory.

How we work

What changes when your electrician works here every day

Panels, devices and chargers installed in buildings where the super holds the riser key.

Diagnosis at the panel, not a guess from the doorway

We open the panel, meter the circuit and find the fault before we quote. A tripping breaker has a cause, and swapping the breaker rarely fixes it.

Permits filed before the work starts

New York City requires a DOB electrical permit for almost everything beyond a like-for-like swap. We file in DOB NOW, schedule the inspection, and hand you the sign-off.

Pre-war buildings are normal here

More than 80 percent of the city's housing is over 50 years old. Plaster and lath, BX cable, shared risers and co-op alteration agreements are the normal working conditions here.

One crew from the first call to the inspection

The electrician who diagnoses your job is the one who does it. You will not be handed to a different company after the estimate.

Straight answers on cost before we open a wall

Panel upgrades, chargers and rewires get a written scope with the cost drivers named. If the riser is undersized, you hear it first.

Ask before anyone opens a wall

Describe what you are seeing and we will tell you whether it needs a visit tonight or a scheduled one. The line is answered 24/7.
