Heat pump and mini-split electrical hookups in New York

Your HVAC contractor sets the units; the circuits, disconnects and panel capacity are electrical work. We run them, file the permit, and tell you up front whether the panel can take the heat pump.

Quick answer

A heat pump hookup in New York City is the electrical side of the install: a 240-volt dedicated circuit and breaker for each outdoor unit, a disconnect within sight of it, control wiring to the indoor heads, and often a load calculation to prove the panel can carry the new load. It's permitted work, and the DOB filing fee for a new circuit runs about $150 to $300.

Updated September 2026

Switching from gas or oil to a heat pump moves your heating load onto the electrical service. In a house with a 100-amp panel, a whole-home heat pump plus an induction range and a charger can outgrow it fast.

We do the load calculation before the equipment is ordered, so the HVAC contractor, you and we all know whether the panel stays, gets a subpanel or needs an upgrade.

Ductless mini-split disconnects and circuits

Each outdoor condenser gets its own 240-volt circuit sized from the nameplate's minimum circuit ampacity and maximum breaker, plus a disconnect within sight of the unit so a technician can kill power safely. Multi-zone systems usually run one circuit to the outdoor unit, which then feeds the indoor heads. We mount the disconnect on a solid surface, run the circuit in armored cable or conduit, seal the wall penetration, and leave the whip ready for the HVAC crew to connect on the day they set the equipment.

Heat pump water heater circuits

Heat pump water heaters replace a gas or electric tank with a unit that pulls heat from the air around it. Many need a dedicated 240-volt, 30-amp circuit; some newer models plug into a 120-volt outlet on their own circuit, which can avoid a panel change in tight apartments. We check the model's electrical requirements, confirm panel space and capacity, and install the circuit and receptacle or hardwired connection. Basement units also get a nearby GFCI-protected outlet for the condensate pump where one is needed.

Load calculations for electrification

Electrification adds up. A whole-home heat pump, a heat pump water heater, an induction range, a dryer and a charger can double the load a panel was sized for. We run the calculation the way the code requires, using your actual equipment, and show you the result against your service size. Where it's tight, load-management devices or a smart panel can let the pieces share capacity. Where it isn't possible, you'll see the service upgrade in the same plan rather than as a surprise halfway through.

Thermostat and control wiring

Most mini-splits run a communication cable between the outdoor unit and each indoor head alongside the power conductors, and ducted heat pumps need low-voltage thermostat wiring with more conductors than an old furnace used. We run control wiring in the same route as the power where the manufacturer allows it, label every conductor, and leave spare conductors in the thermostat cable. That saves a second trip when you add a smart thermostat, an auxiliary heat strip or a humidity sensor later.

What we see in New York buildings

Local Law 154 has required new buildings under seven stories to be all-electric since 2024, and hot-water systems in all buildings follow by the end of 2027, so heat pumps are becoming the default here. They also run through the city's 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. summer peak, when Con Edison's heat-wave voltage reductions of 8 percent in Brooklyn and Queens strain compressors. Circuits sized to the nameplate keep a heat pump running through those days.
